Register Your Domain for the Longest Amount of Time Possible
By Carl Martens | April 9, 2008
Google and other search engines are in business to return sites that contain relevant content related to any given search. As such, these search engines take into account how long a site has been in existence and how long the site will (potentially) be in existence. The reason for this is the length of time shows commitment.
The difference between a good search engine and a bad one is in how well it finds relevant content related to your search phrase. This being the case, it is good practice for these search engines to display sites that have been in existence or registered longer higher because they have shown commitment for that keyword or search phrase.
I knew that the age of a website’s existence somehow computed into search engine algorithms, but I never thought the age of registration did. Makes perfect sense. If a site is only registered for a year at a time the search engine does not know if that site will be in existence the following year because the owner hasn’t shown any commitment.
I plan to register all of my “premium” domain names for the maximum registration length possible through GoDaddy…you should too.
A special thanks to Mary McKnight of RSS Pieces for bringing this to my attention.
